There is a point in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans where the absurdity hits a boiling point and it goes from an OK police procedural to an absolutely nutso character study. I would imagine most people would consider that moment to be when Nic Cage's Bad Lieutenant, Terrence McDonagh, watches two imaginary lizards cavorting on his coffee table while conducting a police stakeout. I felt the original was awesome, a masterful movie but yet so dark, so sad, but unflinching, and depressing, this Bad Lieutenant Port of Call New Orleans didn't leave me with that feeling, it was Cage's performance that hooked me and had me laughing at some of the crazy scenes. Port of Call New Orleans falls into the latter category. It's perhaps 2/3 of a good movie and 1/3 of material that feels out of place or is derivative. Comparisons to the original Bad Lieutenant are unnecessary; Port of Call New Orleans can stand - and fall - on its own merits, inconsistent though they may be.
